Built Environment Accessibility

Case Study 1: Recreation Centre Walkthrough

A mid-sized recreation facility asked for a comprehensive accessibility review before launching new programming for seniors and families.

What we delivered:

  • A full AODA/Ontario Building Code walkthrough
  • Identified barriers affecting mobility, sensory, and cognitive access
  • Practical recommendations including:
    • Widened path-of-travel in lobby
    • Improved visual contrast on steps and handrails
    • Adjusted signage height and font
    • Automatic door timing adjustments
  • A clear, prioritized report with “Immediate / Short-Term / Long-Term” actions

Outcome:
The recreation centre implemented 8 low-cost fixes within 60 days and secured budget approval for long-term upgrades. User feedback showed improved navigation and comfort, especially for older adults and parents with strollers.

Case Study 2: Library Renovation Support

A rural library planned to renovate its main floor and wanted to ensure the redesign aligned with AODA requirements and modern accessibility practices.

What we delivered:

  • Pre-renovation plan review with accessibility lens
  • Recommendations for:
    • Accessible shelving layout and aisle widths
    • Quiet sensory-friendly zones
    • Improved lighting, glare control, and wayfinding
    • Public computer station redesign for wheelchair users
  • An accessibility addendum for their architect and contractor

Outcome:
The library integrated all recommendations into their renovation design. The project later received positive recognition from local seniors’ groups and newcomer families who reported greater comfort and usability.

Case Study 3: Office Barrier Review

An office wanted to understand how accessible their service counters, meeting rooms, and hallways were for residents attending public meetings.

What we delivered:

  • A full interior and exterior barrier identification
  • Photos, measurements, and standards comparison
  • Recommendations such as:
    • Counter height modifications
    • Improved tactile indicators at entrances
    • Accessible meeting room layouts
    • Restroom updates (grab bars, turning radius, lever hardware)
  • A summary document aligned with Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (IASR)

Outcome:
Management approved a phased implementation plan based on the report. Staff training followed, resulting in improved customer service and reduced barriers during consultations.
